ABOUT THE PROPERTY

Charles E. Dearborn Jr. conveyed a conservation easement on 38 acres of his property on Grant Road to the NH Fish and Game Department (NHFG) in 2000. The purposes of the easement were to protect critical wildlife habitat that is part of the Tuttle Swamp ecosystem and to provide opportunities for hiking, bird watching, x-country skiing, and hunting. In 2013, Mr. Dearborn had a timber harvest done, including a 3-acre clearcut to create early successional habitat to benefit a suite of songbirds and other wildlife. The previous harvest was around 1985.

Mr. Dearborn passed away in 2015 and in 2016 his family donated the land to the Town of Newmarket as conservation land.

The State of New Hampshire (Conservation Land Stewardship Program) annually monitors the Conservation Easement for NHFG. There are no trails or parking areas on the Dearborn Conservation Area. A 50-foot strip that extends out to Grant Road and the southeast tip that meets Pendergast Road are the only road frontages. A Driveway ROW Easement was granted by the Town of Newmarket to the house at 202 Grant Road, as a gravel driveway existed prior to the NHFG easement across the Dearborn property.
