The Town of Newmarket Water and Sewer Department will be ending its trial period of issuing monthly water and sewer bills and will return to quarterly billing. Water and Sewer customers will receive a monthly water and sewer bill in April and May, and will begin receiving quarterly bills starting in August 2016. Water and Sewer customers will receive quarterly bills in August, November, February, and May.
Town Administrator Steve Fournier stated “The reason for issuing monthly water and sewer bills was to provide customers with smaller bills and make it easier for them to pay. This would be in line with other service bills homeowners pay such as cable, electricity, and telephone. While we did see an increase in payments, we received a number of objections on having to pay monthly. As such, we will be returning to quarterly payments.”
In order to address the significant amount of money that is currently past due, the Town will also be changing its past due collection policy. In the past, the Town placed a lien on a property that had a bill more than 15 days past due over $5. While the Town may still lien a property, the town will now shut off service to those who do not pay their bills as its main means of enforcement. Residents and property owners will receive notices 14 days prior to shut off.
