2012 Holiday Schedule

  • NEWS:   2nd Issue 2011 Property Tax Bills were mailed Wednesday, November 23 and are NOW DUE:  FEBRUARY 28, 2012 (due to the DRA's error in calculating Newmarket's School Tax Rate.).  The 2011 tax rate increased $3.31 and is now $25.31 per $1,000 of assessed value.  This tax rate was set by the State on November 18, and was corrected on December 8, 2011, based on voter-approved budgets of Town, School, County, and State Education requirements, and factoring in other tax-related funding sources.  For further information, please see the Town Administrator's message or the video addressing the public at http://www.youtube.com/NMNHTV13.

Mortgage Companies Report Taxpayers as Delinquent Before Due Date:  Taxpayers reported receiving Delinquent Notices from their mortgage companies prior to the February 28, 2012, due date. We immediately contacted mortgage companies and CoreLogic, the nation's largest tax service company.  On March 2, CoreLogic responded that after investigating the issue, they "regreted to confirm that CoreLogic did, in fact, report at least 40 taxpayers in Newmarket as delinquent because their/CoreLogic's system failed in noting the tax due date had been extended to February 28 as was reported to them in mid-December."  To rectify the matter, CoreLogic sent notices to the affected mortgage companies on March 2, advising of the error and requesting that the mortgage companies disregard their earlier report.  CoreLogic has requested an updated delinquency report be sent to them March 12.

  FAQs

Can the due date be extended?

  • NH State law requires the property tax due date be December 1 OR 30 days after the actual bill date.  Unfortunately, there is no statutory provision to allow a tax collector or the town governing body to extend this due date.  However, due to Department of Revenue tax rate correction, the Town Council’s request to extend the tax due date for 60 days was granted by the DRA.
How is the interest rate calculated on unpaid taxes?
  • Interest is calculated at 12% on all amounts unpaid after the due date.
  • Partial payments are accepted and encouraged in order to avoid the maximum interest charge.
  • Amounts not paid or postmarked by FEBRUARY 28, 2012, will be subject to 12% interest.
  • Example:  $2,000 unpaid balance X 12% = $240 / 365 days = 66 cents per day interest charge.

Point of InformationYou may wish to seek the advice of your tax accountant.  Property taxes paid on or after January 1, 2012, may prohibit you from claiming your property taxes as a deduction on your 2011 Federal I.R.S. tax return.

    Property Tax Payment Options

Partial Payments and pre-payments are accepted and encouraged.

Pursuant to State law, interest at the rate of 12% is charged on all past-due property taxes, and 18% interest is charged on all property tax liens.  If you are unable to pay your property taxes or tax lien in full, making partial payments will benefit you by reducing the total interest that must be paid.  Upon receiving your partial payment, the Tax Collector's Office will mail you a receipt showing how your payment was applied and the remaining balance due - which you may then use as a reminder for your next payment.

      • Cash, checks, money orders, Mastercard, Discover and American Express are accepted at the Tax Collectors office.
      • Checks or money orders by mail.
      • Check or money orders may be placed in the 24 hour secure drop-box located on the right-hand side of the Town Hall (outside the elevator entrance).
