The Grand Waterways!
Newmarket, from its own town landings, offers boaters hours of voyaging through pristine navigable waterways leading to the Atlantic Ocean. From summer sailing, power boating, canoeing, and kayaking, to winter ice skating and cross-country skiing, as well as year-round fishing of every kind, Newmarket's clean and protected fresh and salt waters are truly
the Seacoast area's prized jewel.
Other in-town recreational activities include a 9-hole golf course, athletic club, and town sponsored sporting leagues and fields of all kinds. The mountains and beaches of the State are but short distances away and offer a myriad of additional pleasures.
Preservation of its quality of life as a New England community and an American small town is important to Newmarket, and continues to be one of its primary goals for both present and future. Newmarket is particularly proud of its Old Home Weekend celebration held in mid-August. Festivities include a traditional street fair, tasty barbecue, an ice cream smorgasbord, fireworks and loads of old-fashioned fun. The gala event also features a showy fireman's muster. Sponsored by the New England States Veteran Firemen's League, the muster pits 30-man crews from across New England and New York in an exciting, and wet, competition.
The Newmarket Fishing Derby also attracts quite a few people in town. In the Derby, children of ages 2 to 14 gather at a local, stocked pond and try for the biggest fish. Prizes and certificates are awarded to the winners, while the losers must console themselves with tales of the one that got away.
Newmarket has numerous recreation parks and conservation areas throughout the town including a little league field, softball fields, boat launch areas and walking/jogging trails along the Lamprey River.
The presence of these public facilities speaks to Newmarket's concern for its citizens, especially the young people, and the imagination and energy of its recreation department. The Recreation Department grabs headlines each year for such innovative ideas as outdoor musical chairs for hundreds and tuna fishing derbies with canned tuna and magnet hooks.
